Picture Your Horse’s 2019 grand champion is Radiant, my latest 4-H art exhibit! Radiant is an Andalusian horse, inspired by a photograph by Tony Stromberg from his book Horses, a compilation of masterful horse photography.
I wanted Radiant to have as much detail as I could, like my other portraits, but I concentrated on giving him a warm, soft glow, more than existed in the reference. Also, while no portrait is an exact copy of the reference photo, I hoped to grow even more independent of the reference than in the past.
In this year’s 4-H show in my county, Radiant captured a “Best in Show” rosette and qualified to go to the New York State Fair. There he stole the judges’ hearts, claiming Special Recognition and the distinguished “Best in Fair” Award, as Imperial did the year before.
After such a brilliant success, Radiant takes an honored place in my gallery. I appreciate the support of my local 4-H coordinators, Melissa and April, and all those who have encouraged me over the years!
